Two things cost them two stars. The right boot had a pinhole leak from day one. I couldn't find it to seal it but walking in wet grass your toes would get moist ever so slightly. Not a big deal honestly. The bigger issue is that the leather over the composite toe is paper thin. This is of course a common wear area and once worn through it allows moisture to wick in past the cap.
My job is VERY hard on boots. I know everyone says that but these repeatedly got wet and covered in all kinds of chemicals every single day. It's rare that the tread outlasts the rest of the boot considering I'm walking around rough, sharp, rocked shorelines every day. If it wasn't for the holes over the toe I'd be able to keep wearing them for some time but today was their last day. Was working in the rain and it would have been nice if at least my feet had remained dry. They lasted me exactly one year and 12 days. Most boots don't make it a full year.
Have had these for about 5 months now and they're great. They initially were a little tight, but the break in was short and relatively easy, and they were fitting excellent in about 6 weeks. They certainly weren't so small they hurt or felt uncomfortable, just snug with boot socks on. I don't like when work boots feel heavy and cumbersome; these are moderately light and unnoticeable most of the time. I replaced the Ariat insoles with custom fit, not because the stock insoles were bad by any means, merely preference. I broke them in with the Ariat soles and they were quite comfortable, gave good support and fair shock absorption. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for good waterproof boots.
The only negative thing I could really say about this boot is that the tongue is rather thick at the top, so when lacing to the top cleat, the sides of the tongue want to stay outside the boot. This is a minor annoyance, not a problem and certainly not worth deducting any rating.
