NEW REVIEW ... I am back to using my old board with a broken key. I got so fed up with the Yamaha 463 that I stored it away until I could get rid of it. The user interface is oppressive to use, and you have to use it over and over and over every time you change a voice. None of your settings for dual voice, split voice, volumes pans and octave for main, dual, or split survive if you select a new voice, nor does your harmony type and volume setting. Re-setting EACH of those can entail over 30 presses of the 'function' "category button. It can easily take ten minutes and hundreds of button presses to change a voice and then have all the other settings the way you want them.
You can save the settings to a registration, but there is NO WAY to see what registration is set. Only the bank number is displayed, no 1-4 designation. No light, no depressed button, no indication in the panel. If you can somehow keep track of the registrations, you are limited to 32. That is the actual amount of voices you have available unless you like Yamaha's pre-settings. I found almost none of the default OTS settings to be to be usable.
So that's it. I had given it four stars but have become so frustrated I no longer use it, and now play an instrument with missing notes. Wasted my money.
Clean sounds, great loop pattern maker, easy dial in features and onboard sampler!
Pattern sequencer is not able to chain together other patterns. Only songs can be chained.
The sequencer has no editing options such as quantize, ppm, track edit. You can not change patterns while in record mode.
I own the Casio CTK 7200 which has much more sequencing features however the patterns accompaniments and sounds are not as good as the Yamaha series!
After about 9 hours of jamming out you will feel more like a DJ with the Yamaha PSR E463 than an actual keyboard player. The onboard loop patterns will eventually become boring as the same beats are not changeable.
All your songs will use the same accompaniments and you will be unable to achieve creating an original entire song or score.
My overall advice is buy this if you want to play it straight and not record demos or songs. BUY THE CASIO CT 7200 if you want the BEST of both worlds but the sounds will be a bit cheaper. It is still worth the price and Yamaha has come a long way on the portable series. This is pretty much getting closer to their arranger line of products!
You can tell this is a well made keyboard, the sound quality is great and it can get really loud. The voices are realistic and it is touch sensitive, I would definitely recommend this keyboard and its definitely worth the price.
