However, the quality of the mic is decidedly lower than my Kraken. I was so excited to ditch Razer as I've had so many issues with them, and the Kraken is so incredibly uncomfortable, I couldn't wait to toss it out, but I feel very disappointed in the mic on the HyperX. Everyone I game with has commented that it sounds like I'm 'on my phone' or 'on the other side of the room' etc. It sounds tinny, weak and cold, compared to the Kraken which has a great mic (despite the rest of it's flaws) and gives a warm, rich and clear sound. I wish I'd listened to the reviews here complaining about the mic, rather than the recommendations from my friends, and kept searching for a more rounded option.
If you spend a lot of time using the mic on your headset, I'd recommend you keep looking for something better. Listen to the reviews here!
Edit: Six month update: After a microphone replacement back in September following my review here, (which did help marginally, though perhaps in hindsight, by that stage friends just felt sorry for me and were trying to make me feel better by saying there was improvement), the mic quality is still terrible. I recorded some gameplay at the weekend which I wanted to upload and share, but I am quite frankly too ashamed by the quality of my mic to do that. Everyone else on the video speaks crisp and clear and my voice sounds distant, tinny, and like I am recording in a white noise room with a few resident wasps. That was the last straw. I can't even go on using it. I record gameplay frequently but have been unable to share for the past six months because of the quality of this headset. But I'm tired of it stifling my leisure time, and will be purchasing a new headset, as far away from HyperX as possible.
Since I was an idiot and actually gave their support a chance to fix the issue I missed the return date for Amazon, so now I have to fork out again because as it turns out, you can't fix something that isn't broken. My mic isn't broken, it is just worse quality than the unbranded £20 one I started gaming with 5 years ago. If you try the headset and find the mic disappointing, send it straight back via amazon. Don't fall for the support promises like I did.
The first thing I’ll mention (which is the only thing you probably want to know) is the sound quality. ITS AMAZING! I’ve had plenty of headsets but none are as good as this, no matter what game you play you can hear everything going on and it’s not loud enough to make your ears bleed either, it’s the perfect balance. I’ve been playing Rainbow Six Siege for years now and no headset has made my gameplay feel so much better than this one, I instantly saw improvement, you can hear every detail and it helps in those clutch situations or when you’re spectating a friend giving them call outs as sometimes your friend doesn’t even hear the Capitão rappelling on the wall behind them. If you’re an epic gamer these are a must!
However, for the mic quality, it’s a much different story. When you get these and first start using it you don’t realise how quiet the mic is and what it sounds like. I save lots of clips on my PS4 and when I watch them back the mic does not sound very good if I’m being honest, it seems like there was more effort in the sound quality than coms. If you use PS4, go to settings - devices - audio devices - adjust microphone level and turn it right up. It might only be my headset as none are the exact same but please make sure you test how it sounds by talking when adjusting microphone level and just asking your friends because they sound like Astro A30s, luckily, my friends don’t mind it but I know how some other people can be and couple that with a minor echo and you’ll probably be getting kicked out of most parties you join.
Overall, I do recommend this headset if you’re the solo gamer, the sound quality is just unreal and makes you feel completely immersed, but if you play with your friends very often, you’d be better off unplugging the mic on the headset and using another like a blue yeti for example.
I hope this review helps with your final decision!
========== NEW REVIEW (17 Aug 2019) ==========
6 Months, this headphone is already dying. My "AD-700X" lasted 4 years, this didn't even last 6 months before it started showing the same issue every cheap headset has.
As expected, the volume control on this headphone is already malfunctioning. Not to mention, the fact that the volume control is at your arm level, it constantly keeps changing the volume whenever it hits your arm.
But the bigger problem is that just like every other awful headset with volume control, it's the volume control that dies first and IS dying first. You have to keep lowering and raising the volume from headset to get clear audio from both sides most of the time. This is horrible, never buying anything from this company again.
Lowering the rating from 2/5 to 1/5. Cheap Chinese hardware being overpriced and pushed into countries like India.
========== OLD REVIEW (30 Oct 2018) ==========
So I bought this a day ago on sale for Rs. 3,999 to replace my Ars Technica AD-700X, which I had bought for Rs.10,000 back in 2015 and the difference is night & day. I can tell you one thing, HyperX is NOT worth more than Rs.1000. Now read on to find out why.
First of all, AD-700X is an "open-air" headphone and the audio quality is natural without overdone bass or treble. Compared to it, HyperX has a high treble and bass, making everything sound scratchy and "sharp", ruining the default sound while the overdone bass muddies everything on top of that. I've used "closed ear" headphones like HyperX before AD-700X and they all block outside noise, the only plus side as far as I am concerned. Also, AD-700X has frequency response between 5-30,000 Mhz while HyperX is just between 15-25,000 Mhz. Sounds reproduced in open-ear headphones like AD sound natural, like it's coming from sources around you in real world, instead of from some cheap speakers. Keep all this in mind when you buy any headphones.
On to the experience with HyperX:
Game-wise, tried out SWAT 4 in MP, had to tweak my Sound Blaster equalizer to hear footsteps clearly (which I did for AD-700X too) but high treble in HyperX makes everything, gunshots, grenades, etc., sound sharp. Divinity: Original Sin, Assassin Creed: Unity, same result. All sounds feel like they are coming out of a low quality speaker system despite HyperX having 53 mm drivers like AD-700X.
You'll still have to tweak equalizer settings of your sound-card (I have Sound Blaster Live: Omni) to make everything sound less awful. Maybe if I hadn't come from a studio quality headphone, I would've rated HyperX better. But since I have, it's less than average.
It's a known fact that gaming headphones compensate for low quality sound drivers they have by adding overdone bass/treble and HyperX is a perfect example of both "features". Expect to tweak equalizer settings a LOT to fix sound quality in everything.
Listened to my collection on Foobar (all FLAC) consisting of Synthwave (The Midnight), Queen and Joshua Bell (classical violin). All of them sound like garbage, heavy bass ruining and muddying vocals to instruments. Don't bother buying HyperX for music. Invest in a studio headphone like AD-700X if you are a music lover.
Went through a few anime shows (One Piece, My Hero Academia, Dragonball Super) and TV shows (Daredevil, Gotham, Legends of Tomorrow) along with a few of my favorite YouTube channels.
Similar to games and music experience, everything sounds awful with overdone bass ruining vocals, forcing you to tweak equalizer settings so you could actually hear the dialogue instead of giving yourself a headache. So if you are planning to watch a lot of shows and movies like I do, HyperX is an awful choice that'll require a lot of time tweaking sound in equalizer.
BUILD QUALITY --------------------------------
I have a big head. These headphones BARELY fit by default, though I know that over time, they'll loosen up a bit. In comparison, AD-700X fit perfectly on my head and felt comfortable from the first day of purchase. In-fact, I wore AD for hours on the first day cause you forgot you had them on, they were light and well built.
HyperX? I feel like taking them off in 10 mins cause they are so tight, heavy and ear cushions are awful leather material that starts making your ears sweat in an hour of use.
THAT said, one big reason I actually bought HyperX was the braided wiring. My AD-700X did not have braided wire, which meant the wire kept getting cut regularly forcing me to tape it up over the years until the whole wire looked like a piece of tape. Eventually, the right ear stopped working cause of this wiring issue. I am hoping that braided wiring in these speakers will make them last longer BUT, the fact that these speakers have the awful design at ear-cups with wires coming out, means these are designed INTENTIONALLY to break, since somebody will accidentally end up pulling on the wires or they will end up getting pulled somehow, eventually.
I'll be surprised if these headphones last 4 years like my AD-700X, but we'll see. I'll update the review when these die.
I bought this headset a day ago. Over the next few days as I listen to more music, play more games and watch more movies, I'll probably get used to these headphones and the build quality. However, I can tell you one thing. These are NOT worth over Rs.1000 and these are being sold on Amazon for Rs.10.000, which is a joke. These companies are ripping off Indians with overpriced garbage. Go pay few more thousand and just buy AD-700X if you're going to buy these at full price, else wait for a sale where these actually go down to the real price they are worth.
Unless you think the awful Chinese engineering in these headphones is worth paying so much, you are just paying for Western brand-name in reality.
Oh and while we're at it, stay away from "surround sound" headphones. There is no such thing as surround sound in headphones. If you have a card like Sound Blaster Omni (mine), it has driver settings which replicate this "surround sound" and it's awful. Stereo sound in headphones naturally mimics surround sound better than fake virtual surround in surround sound headphones like HyperX Cloud II.
Only reason I am buying these is because they were on sale for Rs.4000 and I didn't have budget to spend on studio quality headphones like my precious AD-700X for now.
Even at Rs.4000 (oh sorry, Rs.3999), I feel like I payed too much for these headphones.
However, the mic offers extremely poor output volume (having to use a lot, and I mean a LOT of gain to be heard over any game), and has a lot of bleed-through with headset audio being transmitted over microphone. I've tried all the conventional fixes to rule out it being a product of a flaw with my PC, and none of them have worked whatsoever, which leaves the sole culprit to be the headset. Would not recommend for use in voice chatting.
